✏️ Improving the user experience with emojis

Back in March 2020, I had the pleasure of writing an article for Communicator, a quarterly technical communications magazine based out of the UK and put out by the Institute of Technical Communicators (ISTC).

The article, entitled Improving the user experience with emojis, focuses on:

  • The difference between:

    • Emoticons

    • Smileys

    • Emojis

  • When it’s good to use emojis

    • They can appeal to different intelligence and learning styles

    • They’re excellent for organizing article headings

  • When it’s not so good to use emojis

    • Don’t use emojis to replace words

    • Be careful of the context when you’re writing for an international audience (e.g., don’t use ‘👏‘ in China 🙃)

The pros, I argue, outweigh the cons and you can see from this website that I use emojis to communicate and make your experience more colourful and meaningful. 🌈

To read the article, check it out in the Spring 2022 edition of Communicator.
