✏️ Creating terminology consistency is easier than you think

One of the most frustrating things I've encountered as a content designer is how willy-nilly people are with terminology. Calling a product 'X' and then writing it as 'Y' and sometimes 'Z' "just because" or blatantly claiming "it doesn't matter" is less than palatable.

Words carry meaning, and if those words aren't clear from the start, you create headaches for multiple teams, including (but not limited to): marketeers, translators, support, trainers, UI designers, content designers, sales, and developers. Let's not forget the confusion for the new starters who see the inconsistencies first-hand. 🥴

I wrote an article for the autumn 2023 issue of Communicator (an Institute of Scientific and Technical Communicators (ISTC) publication); it's about how you could align messy terminology at your company, so you can create consistency from start to finish, and in return, make your product easier to understand. Your teammates (and users!) will thank you. 😎

Give it a peek! 😄👇
